The harvest may be over, but November, December, and January are prime processing months for one of our State's sweetest crops: sugar. With thirteen factories littered across the Front Range, the Great Western Sugar Company played a key role in the development of the sugar industry, employing hundreds of Coloradans from the time it opened its Colorado operations in 1901 until the company sold off its factories and plants in 1985.
This December, the Colorado Agricultural Archive is proud to present Sweet Harvest: An Exhibit of The Great Western Sugar Company in Archives & Special Collections, Room 202 of Morgan Library.
The exhibit features photographs, maps, company newsletters, and other materials that highlight the rise and fall of the Great Western Sugar Company from 1901 through 1985. Learn more about the crop, the factories and farms, and those who worked in them and on them. The exhibit is open Monday-Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and will run through Friday, December 15.
The Colorado Agricultural Archive supports efforts to acquire, preserve, and promote the use of records that enhance understanding of Colorado's agrarian heritage. Holdings include the inactive files of more than twenty Colorado agricultural organizations, as well as records of the Colorado State University Agricultural Experiment Station and Cooperative Extension. Primary materials available for research in the Archive collections include meeting minutes, correspondence, reports, fiscal records, oral history recordings and photographic images.
