Visit the First National Bank Gallery on the first floor of Morgan Library to view photos that tell the story of the 4-H Round-Up, a tradition CSU brought to the National Western Stock Show. The exhibit will be on display from Monday, January 21 through Friday, February 28.
Involvement with Stock Show started in 1919
When the Colorado Cooperative Extension Service was founded in 1914 as Colorado State University's outreach division, it went far to fulfill CSU's goal to support the livelihood of the state's rural citizens. It was five years later, in 1919, that Extension became involved with the National Western Stock Show through the organization of youth exhibits and shows. What eventually became known as the 4-H Round-Up has been a Stock Show mainstay ever since.
4-H Round-Up has been a Stock Show mainstay
In fact, it is one of the Round-up's many highlights that has long been tied to CSU Extension and the National Western Stock Show. The Catch-A-Calf Event began in conjunction with Extension in 1935, when ten boys were put in the ring to catch ten calves. The event grew to be very popular and in 1974, it was opened up to 4-H girls. Now, both boys and girls compete to catch one of forty calves, which they will feed and house in order to be judged for quality in next year's Show.

The pictures on display show 4-H Round-Up participants as they have appeared through the years, some with their full-grown calves and others taking part in the many activities planned for them at the Stock Show. All photos have been reproduced from scrapbooks in the records of Extension held by CSU's Archives and Special Collections Department.
