Collegian visual editor wins award for best news photo

Aaron Montoya, visual editor for The Rocky Mountain Collegian and a junior art major at Colorado State University, was recently awarded the 2007 Associated Collegiate Press Photo Excellence Award for best news photo.
The winnining photo, at right, shows grieving family members of CSU student Adrienne Morgan who was killled by a drunk driver in February.
The full caption of the winning photo reads:
"Patty Barnes, 53, embraces Mat Farnsworth, 36, Feb. 8 at Old Chicago in Old Town. They gathered to celebrate the life of Adrienne Morgan, a psychology major, who was killed by a drunk driver this past week. Patty is Adrienne's aunt and Mat is her cousin."
Montoya stands out as an amazing photographer
Montoya, a valued member of the Collegian staff, received a plaque for his work.
"He's a reporter's photographer," said J. David McWSwane, Collegian editor in chief.
"Montoya's not afraid to get in and get the good shots, McSwane said. "He's our secret weapon."
National recognition for CSU student photographer
The Associated Collegiate Press award was co-sponsored by the Natonal Press Photographers Association and Adobe Systems.
