November 16, 2007

Topping 13 other universities by more than 37 total points, the Colorado State University Meat Judging Team captured a national championship at the International Intercollegiate Meat Judging Contest hosted by Tyson in Dakota City, Neb. on Nov. 11.

Fourth national championship for CSU

This is the fourth national championship in intercollegiate meat judging for the university. Colorado State also won national championships in 1981, 1985 and 1995. This year's team members competed in the areas of beef grading, beef judging, pork judging, lamb judging, written reasons, and specifications.

Correctly ranked individual meat product exhibits

As team members, undergraduate students critically evaluate carcasses and wholesale meat products from all three red-meat species and utilize critical thinking skills, logic as well as current product values to correctly rank individual meat product exhibits. The majority of the logic and values utilized by the students in competition closely follows USDA and meat industry standards.

This year's team began its competitive season in January at the 101st National Western Stock Show and has competed at seven intercollegiate contests this year earning two champion team finishes, three reserve champion team finishes, a single third place team finish and a single fourth place team finish.
