In 1957 Colorado A&M officially became Colorado State University and during the upcoming football season the CSU Marching Band is having a 50 Year Celebration!
As part of the celebration, the Marching Band has new uniforms that debuted at the Rocky Mountain Showdown and can be seen for the first time at home against Cal on Saturday, Sept. 8.
New look and image
"The new uniform gives us a whole new look and image. They're awesome!" says Chris Krueger, 4th year sousaphone player and section leader.
J. Steven Moore, Director of Bands at Colorado State began the design process over a year and half ago with funding provided by the College of Liberal Arts; the new uniform was designed by New York fashion designer Michael Cesario, and manufactured by Fred J. Miller, Inc.
"The CSU Marching Band is especially grateful to the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts, Ann Gill, for making this project a reality," says Moore.
The life of a typical uniform is seven years and the last uniforms were used for 10 seasons. Student section leaders participated in the design process and the end result is a classic dark pant in CSU green with a crisp white top featuring a beautifully embroidered Ram logo on the front. The hat features a tall French plume to create more height to the overall look.
Lightweight fabric flows and moves easily
Gone are days of heavy, musty wool uniforms that were only dry cleaned once a year. With the current trend in marching toward body movement and dance, the uniform, now called performance wear, sports new technology as the lightweight fabric flows and moves easily as well as being machine washable.
"When our 235 member marching band takes the field, we want our fans to be very proud of our school - the new uniform creates a strong identity and conveys this pride," says Moore.
Newly scored arrangements
In addition to the uniform, the anniversary celebration program is highlighted by newly scored arrangements of the Fight Song and Spell Yell performed during exciting pre-game and half-time performances, complete with dramatic visual effects. The colorful half-time show features a clever segment for each of the last five decades.
The changes to the traditional spirit songs were carefully and respectfully made to create as much punch and power as possible. Fans will notice a fuller richer quality reverberating across the stadium, led by what Moore touts as "the strongest drum line in CSU Marching Band history - they are truly the pulse of the band."
Entertain fans and provide spirit throughout the game
"As a band we hope to entertain fans while excelling at our main job - to be, along with the cheerleaders, the center of spirit throughout the game, exudes Moore. The 50 Year Celebration salutes the past while carrying our best traditions forward."
Fans can enjoy the home field debut of the 50 Year Celebration when CSU takes on Cal, this Saturday, Sept. 8 - don't miss all the fun!
